Life Before Search
What did I do before I was so involved with search?
Well...
Maximized Online, General Manager,
January 1995 - June 1996
I oversaw the day-to-day operations of a 7 person website development
company. My duties included client consultations, site planning, art direction, press and
promotional relations, hiring and fiscal review. In addition, I authored sales materials
explaining Internet technical issues. Sites created include Calavo Avocados and the Santa Ana Zoo.
Orange County Register, Graphics
Reporter,
January 1994 - January 1996
I worked with artists to tell stories through informational graphics (like
this one). I
gathered material through interviews and research, then outlined a proposed graphic for
review with an artist. I then wrote copy for the graphic. I produced a wide variety of
feature and breaking news graphics, ranging from the OJ Simpson murder trial to the inner
workings of a nuclear power plant.
Los Angeles Times, Editorial Researcher
September 1989 - January 1994
I reported and researched informational graphics for the city desk
of the Orange County Edition. In addition, I wrote a weekly column on traffic issues,
answering questions sent in by readers.
Awards and Distinctions
1999 Tenagra Award Winner: I
received the Tenagra for Individual Contribution to Internet Marketing.
The Tenagra Awards are the Internet marketing industry's oldest
peer-review awards program.
The
Network: I was added in January 1999 to The Network, a Who's Who of the Internet that was produced by the former Industry Standard magazine
Society of Newspaper Design: Ten awards ranging from silver to award of excellence for
informational graphics produced. I also spoke at national conventions on informational
graphic reporting.
Investigative Reporters and Editors: I authored an article on low-tech computer assisted
reporting, explaining how to make use of spreadsheets for daily reporting. I also spoke on
spreadsheet use and graphic reporting at several conventions.
Education University of California, Irvine: B.A. in English, June 1988
- Major: English, Emphasis in Writing
- Minor: Political Science
